40 Finnish Phrases Every Taxi Driver Should Know — Including What Customers Actually Say Back
A taxi ride in Finland is a script with five scenes: greeting, destination, the ride, payment, goodbye. Learn the script and you can run a full working day in Finnish long before you're "fluent." This guide gives you all five scenes — and, just as importantly, what customers will actually say back to you, in the colloquial spoken Finnish (puhekieli) that no exam prepares you for.
Scene 1: Greeting and pickup

What you'll hear back: Lentokentälle, kiitos (to the airport, thanks), Rautatieasemalle (to the railway station), or an address — often mumbled fast: Mannerheimintie kolkyt kaks — note kolkyt kaks, the spoken form of kolmekymmentäkaksi (32).
Scene 2: Route and navigation

What you'll hear back: Ihan sama (doesn't matter — very common), Aja vaan sitä tuttua reittiä (just drive the usual route), Tähän on hyvä (here is fine).
Scene 3: During the ride

Remember: many Finnish passengers prefer a quiet ride, and that's not rudeness. Offer one line of small talk; if you get a one-word answer, enjoy the silence together. That's Finnish hospitality too.

What you'll hear back: Kortilla (by card — the answer 90% of the time), Ei tarvii kuittia (no receipt needed — note tarvii, spoken form of tarvitse), Pidä loput (keep the change — rare but wonderful).

Problem situations — the phrases you hope not to need
- Turvavyö pitää olla kiinni koko matkan. — The seatbelt must stay fastened for the whole trip.
- Valitettavasti autoon mahtuu vain neljä matkustajaa. — Unfortunately the car only takes four passengers.
- Tällä autolla ei voi maksaa käteisellä. — This car doesn't accept cash.
- Nyt täytyy pysähtyä hetkeksi. — We need to stop for a moment.
- Kaikki hyvin? Tarvitsetteko apua? — Everything okay? Do you need help?
Why the puhekieli column matters more than the phrase column
