Essential Finnish Medical Vocabulary: 100+ Words Every Healthcare Worker Needs

Medical Finnish looks intimidating on paper — terveyskeskuslääkäri, verenpainemittari, kipulääke. But there's good news hiding in those long words: Finnish medical vocabulary is built from a small set of reusable parts. Learn veri (blood), paine (pressure), and mittari (meter), and verenpainemittari assembles itself.

This guide gives you the core vocabulary organised the way you'll actually meet it on a shift — not alphabetically, but by situation. It's written for nurses, practical nurses (lähihoitaja), care assistants, and anyone else working in Finnish healthcare.

The building blocks

Master these roots first — they appear inside dozens of compound words:

Body parts (kehonosat)

Symptoms (oireet)

Patients rarely announce symptoms formally. Instead of minulla on pahoinvointia, you'll hear mua oksettaa (I feel like throwing up — pure puhekieli). Learning the spoken forms alongside the standard ones is what makes real patient communication possible.

• Hyvää huomenta! Miten olette nukkunut? — Good morning! How did you sleep?
• Onko teillä kipuja? — Are you in pain?
• Missä kipu tuntuu? — Where does it hurt?
• Kuinka kova kipu on asteikolla yhdestä kymmeneen? — How strong is the pain on a scale of 1 to 10?
• Otan teiltä verikokeen. — I'll take a blood sample.
• Mittaan verenpaineen. — I'll measure your blood pressure.
• Tässä on aamulääkkeenne. — Here are your morning medications.
• Onko teillä allergioita? — Do you have any allergies?
• Milloin oireet alkoivat? — When did the symptoms start?
• Tarvitsetteko apua peseytymisessä? — Do you need help washing?
• Nostan sängyn päätyä. — I'll raise the head of the bed.
• Soittakaa kelloa, jos tarvitsette jotain. — Ring the bell if you need anything.
• Lääkäri tulee kierrolle aamupäivällä. — The doctor will do rounds in the morning.

How to actually learn all this

A hundred words in tables is reference material, not learning. What works:

• Learn in dialogues, not lists. "Taking a blood pressure reading" as a complete conversation encodes the vocabulary with its grammar and context attached.

• Test under pressure. Timed practice exams expose which words you only half-know.
